Black History Month Magazine launched the National Black History Month Poetry Competition in October 2023. This competition was an important addition to the Black History Month celebrations and theme: Saluting Our Sisters.
It provides an opportunity to focus on the contributions and achievements of black women and simultaneously shines a light on emerging poets amongst the African and Caribbean community.
People were encouraged to share their original poems about black women. Over 3000 poems were submitting ranging from children as young as 5 years old to adults in their 60s. Our team of judges who comprised of poets, academics and lovers of poetry.
We are delighted to announce our shortlist of poems celebrating black women. Cherron Inko-Tariah, Editor of BHM Magazine says:
“We have been overwhelmed and impressed by both the volume and the high quality of submissions. There is some fantastic talent out there and I am honoured that we provided a platform to showcase this.”
We have a range of prizes including a limited edition House of Marley Turntable, courtesy of BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE*, in cinemas nationwide on Valentine’s Day (14th February). The final winning poems will be announced at a prestigious reception on 21st March 2024 to coincide with World poetry day and international women’s month.
**With the film title and specific product number laser etched into the turntable’s bamboo plinth, each of the limited available turntables will come with a certificate of authenticity from the Marley Family.
