Women In The Shade 2025 Conference: Empowering Black Women in Leadership

Empowering Black Women in Leadership: Women In The Shade’s 2025 conference will tackle underrepresentation and inspire change with a powerful lineup of speakers and discussions in Birmingham this January.

The highly anticipated 2025 Women In The Shade conference is set to take place on 16th January 2025 at 3 Queensway, Birmingham. With the compelling theme, “The Power of Colour – What Happens When We Are Not in the Room,” this event will highlight the need for greater representation of Black women in leadership roles, with a particular focus on uniformed services. The conference promises a day of inspiration, learning, and networking, featuring thought-provoking speakers, engaging panel discussions, and practical workshops.

The keynote address will be delivered by Mrs Kerry-Ann Knight, whose groundbreaking 12-year career in the British Army offers invaluable lessons in resilience and advocacy. As the only Black female soldier in her regiment, Kerry-Ann played a vital role in promoting cultural awareness and inclusion. Her contributions included organising engagement stands and conferences for the Army Multicultural Network, highlighting the lived experiences of minoritised soldiers. Following systemic challenges, Kerry-Ann’s courage in confronting racism and harassment within the Army culminated in a landmark apology and settlement. Now embarking on a new career in midwifery, her keynote address promises to inspire and inform.

The event will also welcome a range of distinguished speakers. Grace Ononiwu CBE, a pioneer in public service, will share insights into breaking barriers and driving leadership transformation. Dr Shungu Hilda M’gadzah, with expertise in health and education, will discuss resilience and navigating leadership spaces. Dr Sarah Chapman, an advocate for equity, will offer practical advice for creating inclusive workplaces. Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts, Police and Crime Commissioner for Derbyshire, will speak about the importance of representation in achieving sustainable organisational change.

The conference will feature a high-profile panel discussion with experts from diverse sectors, addressing the critical topic of inclusive leadership. Jo Richardson, Equality & Diversity Lead at the National Fire Chiefs Council, will speak on diversity within uniformed services. Gavin Stephenson, representing the National Police Chiefs’ Council, will highlight the importance of diverse perspectives in law enforcement.

The theme of the conference, “The Power of Colour – What Happens When We Are Not in the Room,” underscores the urgency of increasing Black women’s representation in decision-making spaces. The event aims to equip attendees with the tools, networks, and inspiration to challenge systemic barriers and drive change.
