Prof. Hakim Adi: The History of African and Caribbean people in Britain

In conversation with Professor Hakim Adi, Professor of the History of Africa and the African Diaspora at the University of Chichester.

Professor Hakim Adi is Professor of the History of Africa and the African Diaspora at the University of Chichester. His research focusses on the history of Africa and the African Diaspora in Britain. Professor Adi is first historian of African heritage to become a professor of History in Britain.

 

Professor Adi has written extensively on the history of Africa and the significant role that the African Diaspora have played in the history of Britain. Some of his most recent work includes Black Voices on Britain (MacMillan, 2022) edited by Hakim Adi, and African and Caribbean People in Britain: a History (Allen Lane, 2022).

Adi has also written children’s history books such as The History of the African and Caribbean Communities in Britain (2005).

Professor Adi is also one of the founders of the Young Historians Project which aims to encourage young people of African and Caribbean descent to become the historians of the future.

In addition, Adi has worked on projects such as ‘Our Migration Story’ which provides resources for students and teachers who want to learn about the impact of migration on Britain.

In addition to his academic work, Professor Adi campaigns for the history of Africa and the African Diaspora to be taught in schools, and, through his work with the Young Historians Project aims to increase the number of African and Caribbean students pursuing the study of History to University and beyond.
