Middle Way Mentoring has announced the return of the Platform Conference for Writers of Colour, a major bi-annual event dedicated to championing underrepresented voices in literature. Taking place on 5 April at Curve Theatre in Leicester, the conference promises a dynamic day of inspiration, education, and opportunity for writers of colour across the UK.
Launched in response to the ongoing challenges faced by diverse authors in the publishing industry—and a decade on from Spread the Word’s landmark Writing the Future report—the Platform Conference aims to break down barriers and spotlight talent that too often goes unheard. With a packed schedule of workshops, panel discussions, and networking events, attendees will gain practical insights into navigating the literary landscape, refining their craft, and building sustainable writing careers.
One of the key highlights of the event will be the launch of In the Middle, a brand-new anthology showcasing powerful contemporary writing from emerging voices in the Midlands.
A Celebration of Talent and Inclusion
The 2025 edition of the Platform Conference features an impressive lineup of acclaimed authors, literary agents, and publishing professionals, including Deepa Anappara, Nick Makoha, Carol Leeming, Ty’rone Haughton, Elaine Chiew, Melissa Fu, Leila Rasheed, and Shahed Yousaf.
Participants can expect engaging sessions on topics such as:
-
Navigating the publishing industry as a writer of colour
-
Leading community-driven creative projects
-
Sustaining a long-term creative practice
Farhana Shaikh, founder of Middle Way Mentoring, said: “The Platform Conference is designed to create a safe space where writers of colour can connect, share their experiences of the industry and get much-needed guidance on how to navigate their writing journey. The conference showcases established authors alongside exciting new voices to celebrate the talent that is often overlooked, while also providing inspiration, tools and resources for attendees so they can take their craft to the next level.”
