Linda Lewis: The Trailblazing Voice of British Black Music – A Legacy Remembered

Linda Lewis(born Linda Fredericks) was the eldest of six children born to a mixed race single Mum, post War in 1950s East London.

Blessed with a voice of an angel and vocal range of five octaves; Linda stood out at a very young age as the only Black girl in her Catholic school.

Against the odds, she went on to set a musical precedent by being the very first British Black woman to enter the UK charts; and went on to play legendary Glastonbury Festival in 1971 at the tender age of just twenty. A multi-talented singer /song writer and guitarist, Linda’s distinctive look, beguiling disposition and sound, attracted a lot of attention and always found her in the company of major music icons including David Bowie, Rod Stewart, David Essex, Cat Stevens, Marc Bolan and Stevie Wonder to name a few.

Everyone wanted to be with Linda! Linda sadly passed away very suddenly on May 3rd 2023 but her musical legacy lives on. Pink Flamingo Media Group is currently in talks regarding a stage show on Linda’s extraordinary life and potential film and TV Series.

A ‘Blue Plaque’ in Linda’s memory was unveiled on 27th September (her birthday) at Arlington Mansions, Sutton Lane, London W4 4HE
