2023 has been the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the SS Windrush. The year has seen a diverse range of responses including commemoration of the first arrivals, recollections of initial racism and hostility, celebration of the Windrush generation – and their children’s – achievements, recognition of a huge contribution to public services and the economy, responses to the continuing ‘Windrush scandal’ and racism today, and reflections on a lasting contribution to national culture and identity.
But what might we be talking about at the time of Windrush 100? One generation on, how will the issues have changed? This webinar will explore how important will the story of Windrush be in understanding the nation in 2048, and which parts will seem most important? What will the relationship be between Windrush and the wider stories of an increasingly diverse society? Can we set ourselves ambitions to tackle the issues that were unresolved in 2023?
