Is it True? Tales from the Magic City with Jocelyn Hurtado

We all have heard crazy stories of events, people and places from the past from our parents, aunts and uncles or even our neighbors that seem hard to believe or not sure if it really happened. This live series hosted by Archivist Jocelyn Hurtado, will begin with pre-fixed topics and future episodes will be based on audience suggestions. The host will ask the social media followers to share a story they heard about the Magic City and then research these stories and see if there are any supporting documents that might be able to prove if it is true or not.

MIAMI, FL April 2, 2020– The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. will launch a new social media project called the #SaferAtHome Virtual Series as a way to interact with the community, and worldwide audience, with black history programming. The Black Archives, just like most other cultural organizations, has been closed since the local government “Stay at Home” order two weeks ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the wake of the closures, the organization has bad to postpone its March 19 GlassHouse Comedy Experience, and April 3 Lyric Live Season 7 opener. The #SaferAtHome Virtual Series, will include live broadcasts from Black Archives staff on social media, covering Black History trivia, little-known facts, profiles in black history, and storytime for children.

“Right now our community, our country, and the world is facing very uncertain times,” said Black Archives Executive Director Timothy A. Barber. “More than ever, people want to remain connected to one another and engage in activities that will take their minds away from everything that’s going on. By launching this series, The Black Archives is letting our community know that we are standing with them in this difficult time and we are still in business carrying out our mission preserve black history and share it with the public in unique and relevant ways.”

Now that more and more cities around the country are shutting down by government order, the #SaferAtHome Virtual Series will reinforce the best practices in place by encouraging people to stay at home and tune in to one of the following programs on the Black Archives Instagram (@bahltsoflo) or Facebook (@BlackArchivesMIA) live:
