Mix & Move: Voguing with Jay Jay Revlon

Sunday 17th July

Jay Jay Revlon, father of the House of Revlon and instrumental member of the UK voguing scene, leads you, no matter your experience, in a voguing workshop.

You don’t need a partner, or any dance experience – just put the date in your diary and come along to enjoy some wonderful moments moving together.

Our monthly Mix & Move events let you find your flair on the dancefloor, meet new people and try out new styles.

Revlon joins us as part of the In the Black Fantastic Weekender, three days of music, poetry, comedy, film and talks celebrating the breadth of contemporary Black art and culture.

Voguing is a dance movement that originated in the 1970s and 1980s in New York among the predominantly Black gay community in Harlem.

Houses were formed to create a safe community and family for LBGTQI+ people to come together. Vogue ballroom culture consists of balls where members of each house compete in a catwalk battle, through the elegant and powerful dance form.

Voguing takes its name from Vogue magazine, as a lot of the arm and hand movements mirror the poses of models and play out actions such as applying makeup or taking phone calls.

As father of the UK House of Revlon, Jay Jay Revlon has been a devoted influence on the London ballroom scene for the past five years and has been instrumental in defining how ballroom in the UK is run.

Born and raised in Peckham, south London, Revlon has many hats. His focus is curating events, DJing, ballroom (voguing) and mentoring. He is a committed community activist dedicated to creating safe spaces and conversations for QPOC and LGBTQI+ people.
