Durand Jones & The Indications

Tue 6 August 2019

Their aesthetic is steeped in the golden, strings-infused dreaminess of 70s soul, but this band of 20-somethings aren’t looking backwards.

Support comes from explosive ten-piece funk-pop ensemble TOUCAN.

Helmed by Durand Jones and vocalist cum drummer Aaron Frazer, The Indications conjure up Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions.

Guitarist Blake Rhein moonlights as a researcher for archival record label The Numero Group, but these students of soul have their feet planted firmly in the present.

On American Love Call, the band’s soulful sophomore LP, they reckon with how to balance love and fury in modern-day America, on a record as grand and cinematic as it is focused on fleeting details.

The Indications’ 2016 self-titled debut was recorded for $452.11, including a case of beer.

The five friends, who met as students at Indiana University in Bloomington, initially intended it as a stand-alone recording project, on which vocalist Jones, a native of rural Louisiana, was joined by Frazer, Rhein, bassist Kyle Houpt, and keyboardist Steve Okonski.

The album was released by soul label Colemine Records, and quickly picked up steam on the back of the band’s booming live show and the enthusiastic recommendation of independent record store clerks across the country.
