#BCAFilmFest presents Beyond Belle: Black Womanhood in the British Frame

Wednesday 25 May, 7.00pm-9.30pm

#BCAFilmFest returns to present Beyond Belle, the first in its series of salon conversations for 2016. Join us for a screening of the acclaimed 2013 film BELLE, directed by BAFTA-winning British director Amma Asante. The film will be followed by a salon conversation exploring how Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of 18th-century naval captain Sir John Lindsay and enslaved woman Maria Belle, came to be a leading aristocrat at a time when women of colour occupied such low status in British society.

Discuss how the colour of her skin prevented Dido from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. What happened to her legacy? What does her story tell us about the nature of British society at the time?

Join our salon conversation with special guest panellists from the worlds of film, journalism and media, including: #BCAFilmFest curator Jan Asante; founder of the ‘The British Blacklist’ Akua Gyami; and film educator and contributor to Black Filmmaker International Film Festival Jennifer Robinson. Join in as they invite you to discuss representations of Black and mixed heritage womanhood on screen.

Tickets are £7
