This year marks the 19th annual celebrations of the life and legacies of Rosa Parks, the woman who refused to give up her seat to a white person on the bus on December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, USA.
Rosa’s courageous action triggered a series of civil rights protests. Her defiance at this point in history signified a remarkable push and the need for everyone to be treated fairly and equitably in a deeply segregated society. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Belonging Here”. This theme aims to salute the courage, achievements, and contributions of Rosa Parks to the struggle for equity, stress the need to build a society where everyone is respected and valued and can maximise their life chances.
The discussions at this symposium will seek to answer many questions including:
- What does it mean to belong?
- How does it feel to be excluded?
- How can we create a more inclusive and fairer society?
