The theme of this year’s conference is “Eyes Wide Open: Moving Forwards and Staying Unified”.
Moving Forwards and Staying Unified reflects the difficulties we have faced such as an increase in racism following Brexit, increases in Islamophobia, attacks on the Windrush generation and uncertainty about what the future holds. In the face of such struggles, self-organisation and reflecting on the lessons we have learned is of paramount importance.
bell hooks told us that “Knowledge rooted in experience shapes what we value” and so in our first panel “Lessons We Can Learn” we want to consider the education we have received, the knowledge we can pass forwards and the changes that we can make.
Maya Angelou declared that “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style” and in this vein, we want to highlight the achievements made by our sxsters who have thrived in spaces which are white-dominated for our second panel “Thriving in White Spaces“. We want to celebrate the achievements, pass on the learning, and also consider the ways in which they have been able to take care of themselves.
We want attendees to feel the wisdom of our shared experiences and to feel inspired moving forwards, in the power of self-organisation and sxsterhood.
