What do good works and charity mean in the 21st century? For half a century, Anoek’s great-aunt ran the charity Auxilium (Latin for Help). Since it was established in the 1960s, the foundation has provided financial support to various small-scale medical projects in Africa. Now at the age of 97, her great-aunt is passing on responsibility for the foundation to Anoek. But how to proceed? To find answers, Anoek sets off for Africa on an illuminating and challenging voyage into the heart of First World / Third World relations.

Post-show discussion with Prof. James Thompson of University of Manchester and In Place of War will follow the performance, reflecting on the contentious role of European aid to Africa.
