Mama Afrika

Friday 7 November

Zimbabwean-born singer, musician and storyteller Anna Mudeka brings to life the extraordinary journey of Miriam Makeba – the iconic South African singer, songwriter and civil rights activist.

Mama Afrika charts her rise from the vibrant yet troubled townships of Johannesburg to international stardom, her exile for speaking out against apartheid, and the challenges she faced for championing Black rights across the globe.

Told through four dynamic character incarnations, this deeply moving solo show explores a life shaped by hardship, tragedy, resilience and hope. Featuring some of Makeba’s most beloved songs – including Mbube, Pata Pata and Soweto Blues – the performance captures the unbreakable spirit and enduring legacy of a true legend.

🎭 Suitable for family audiences of all ages, Mama Afrika is written by Zimbabwean playwright Tomas Lutuli Brickhill, with musical direction and sound by John Vigar at Tontena Music, and backing tracks by multi-instrumentalist Ziva Guveya. Directed by Tonia Daley-Campbell and produced by Arts La’Olam, this unforgettable tribute was originally co-commissioned by Norwich Arts Centre and is supported by Arts Council England, The Miriam Makeba Foundation, and Norwich Theatre.
