The funding is designed to foster community cohesion and bring residents together to celebrate the borough’s diversity and culture. Whether you’re planning a street party for neighbours or a larger community gathering, these grants can help make your event a success.
The aim of the Community Chest is to empower residents to host inclusive events that strengthen relationships within the community. By supporting these events, the council hopes to create opportunities for people to connect, share experiences, and celebrate what makes Tower Hamlets unique.
Eligible Events for Funding
The grants are available for events marking the following significant occasions in 2025:
- The Big Lunch – June 2025
The Big Lunch is the UK’s largest annual get-together for neighbours, taking place on the first weekend of June. This nationwide event encourages people to step outside, meet their neighbours, and enjoy a meal together. In Tower Hamlets, it provides an opportunity to celebrate local diversity and promote neighbourly bonds, whether you’re hosting a street party, picnic, or other community activities. - The Great Get Together – 21-22 June 2025 (TBC)
This event, inspired by Jo Cox’s message that “we have more in common than that which divides us,” encourages communities to come together and celebrate what unites us. It’s a weekend of inclusive, community-led events across the UK, and Tower Hamlets residents are encouraged to participate by organising local events to foster a spirit of unity. - VE Day 80th Anniversary – 8-11 May 2025
May 8th, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, commemorating the end of WWII in Europe. The anniversary is a significant historical moment, and the council is inviting applications for events taking place from May 8 to 11, 2025. This is an opportunity to reflect on history, honour those who fought for peace, and bring people together in celebration.
