Oct 11th 2024 marks the 246th birthday of George Bridgetower, the African-European virtuoso violinist for whom Beethoven wrote the so-called Kreutzer Sonata.
Would you compose something for me to play, Sir?
The Bridgetower Sonata gives us a glimpse into the creative but short-lived relationship which blossomed between the violinist and the composer – and a taste of the wonderful music which grew out of it.
Bridgetower performed at the premiere of the ‘Kreutzer Sonata’ in Vienna. After a row with the composer, he came to live in England. He died in Peckham in 1860, and is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery.
