Billy Waters is Dancing

Thursday 10 October

William ‘Billy’ Waters was a busker, sailor, immigrant, father, lover, extraordinary talent, and a forgotten Black celebrity from Regency London.

After joining the British Navy during the American War of Independence, Waters fell from the rigging and lost his right leg. He became renowned as a flamboyant and celebrated busker outside West End theatres, but nevertheless died completely destitute.

Discover his extraordinary journey with Mary Shannon, author of Billy Waters is Dancing, on the site of the former court where Billy appeared in front of the magistrates. In person and online tickets available.
