Tracing Your Ancestry | Emancipation and the Slave Compensation Records

Thursday 1 August

Paul Crooks explores reparations through the lens of his ancestry research drawing on his research into the 1834 Slave Compensation Records.

In 1833, the British government passed legislation to end its system of enslavement. Britain raised the equivalent of £20 billion to compensate Britain’s slave owners for the “loss of human property.” It was the largest state-sponsored payout in British history before the banking crisis in 2008. Taxpayers’ money directly benefited individuals who had already profited from the system of slavery.

In this Black History masterclass, speaker Paul Crooks will discuss:

  • His personal journey in successfully tracing uncompensated ancestors once enslaved in Jamaica.
  • Specific evidence of compensation linked to the enslavement of his ancestors.
  • The Slave Compensation Act of 1834.
  • Research on slave-owners.
  • Exploring ancestry as a means to bring ancestral stories of Africans in the diaspora to life.
