Walking Tour: 18th & 19th Century Black History of Sheffield

Thursday 8th June

Join Mark Hutchinson for a brief history of the Black presence in Sheffield during the 18th and 19th centuries. You’ll hear about a fascinating selection of Black visitors who came to Sheffield – who came here and what brought them?

Were any Black figures born in, and life-time residents of, Sheffield? How did Sheffield respond to slavery, empire and any Black presence in Sheffield? The tour will consider the legacy of these aspects on the city.

You’ll discover the lives and stories of remarkable figures including Olaudah Equiano, Pablo Fanque and Ida B. Wells, as well as groups who supported runaway slaves and businesses such as The Sheffield Register.

The walk will start at Weston Park Museum and end at the Graves Gallery in Sheffield city centre.

Mark Hutchinson is a historian, retired teacher and campaigner. He has for several years led historical city walks that highlight Sheffield’s Black history past particularly from an African-Caribbean perspective. In his spare time, he has acted as a trustee for the charitable organisations Journey to Justice and Sheffield Environmental Movement. He is a long-time Elvis fan.
