Understanding the Oppression of Black Women and Girl
Black women and girls experience a unique form of oppression as a result of our racial and gender identities. This is often referred to as “misogynoir”. misogynoir is the specific intersectional discrimination directed towards Black women. It is the combination of the words “misogyny” (hatred or prejudice against women) and “anti-blackness” (prejudice or discrimination against Black people). misogynoir is unique to Black women, a specific type of discrimination experienced because of prejudices against us for being Women and Black. This type of intersectional discrimination can manifest in a variety of ways, from subtle microaggressions to overt barriers in healthcare, education, in the workplace, and other areas of life.
Black Women and Girls Need Safe Spaces: Here’s Why
Safe spaces provide a vital source of support and community for Black women and girls. These spaces allow us to freely express ourselves and discuss issues we face without fear of judgement or marginalisation. We provide an opportunity for Black women and girls to work on healing and also serve as a platform for organising and advocating for change.
Safe spaces for Black women and girls also provide a space where our perspectives and experiences are centred and validated. In mainstream society, our voices and perspectives are often ignored or dismissed. Safe spaces give us the opportunity to share our stories and be heard.
Furthermore, safe spaces for Black women and girls also allow us to connect with other Black women and girls who understand and share similar experiences.
In short, safe spaces for black women are crucial for our physical and mental wellbeing, our ability to connect with others, and our ability to advocate for collective change. The Dear Black Women and Girls Festival provides a place where we can feel seen, heard, and valued, and where we can build the community and support we need to navigate and overcome the unique challenges we face.
