A House of Call

Saturday 25th March 2023

Words open up new worlds as the London Philharmonic Orchestra premieres a work by composer Heiner Goebbels that takes its name from James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake.

Composer Heiner Goebbels calls it ‘an imaginary notebook’, but words are only a jumping-off point in this evening-long adventure for orchestra and audience alike.

They’re a source of stimulation, of provocation, of distant memories and new beginnings, drawn from literature, conversation and cultures ranging from central Asia to South America, as well as Goebbels’s own journeys, personal encounters and explorations in the archives.

Sounds incredible? Wait till you hear it, as the LPO presents a premiere without precedent: the first UK hearing for an instant contemporary classic.

Performed with kind permission of Ensemble Modern
