This reading from “Black Man Listen”, the biography of JR Ralph Casimir, the pioneering Pan-Africanist, Garveyite and poet from Dominica, is the latest in the series En Papillote, launched in 2021 by Papillote Press. Here, the author, Casimir’s granddaughter, reads from the book, highlighting her memories of her grandfather.
Publisher Polly Pattullo, from Papillote Press, the independent publisher based in Dominica and the UK, introduces the readings with a personal note about each title. She says: “I’m very pleased to be able to alert you to this reading from the biography of JR Ralph Casimir, until now, a much neglected figure in the story of Dominica’s march to independence. He made such an important contribution to both the liberation and literature of the island.”
The videos were launched on YouTube and other social media outlets in January 2021. The series started with short readings by the authors of Papillote’s Young Adult novels and continued with readings from other authors on the Papillote Press list, including Mac Donald Dixon’s reading from his crime novel, “A Scream in the Shadows”. “These readings in En Papillote are a way of bringing our authors and their important writing to readers everywhere,” says Polly Pattullo
