An award-winning playwright and popular broadcaster, as well as the author of five poetry books, Lemn Sissay has a way with words.
Sissay is perhaps best known for his work with the BBC, which shines a spotlight on his upbringing as a foster child in the UK. In 1995, he shared his story in the BBC documentary Internal Flight and his BBC radio documentary Child of the State was nominated for a 2010 Sony Award. Much of his work is influenced by his quest to find his parents. After a long search, he located his birth mother in Gambia and has since come to know the rest of his family.
Sissay is Associate Artist at the Southbank Centre, Patron of The Letterbox Club and The Reader Organisation, Ambassador for The Children’s Reading Fund, Trustee of Forward Arts Foundation, an Inaugural Trustee of World Book Night and an Honorary Doctor of Letters. He has been a writer from birth and foremost a poet.
