Jonathan King, Von Hűgel Research Fellow at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge, will discuss Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753) who, with Newton, dominated science in London during the first half of the 18th century. In particular, King will highlight Sloane’s Voyage to Jamaica (1707 & 1725), which constitutes the first scientific accounts published in Britain about tropical America and provides an extraordinary insight into the island and its inhabitants at this time.
