Community organisation BTWSC/African Histories Revisited is once again supporting Historic England’s London History Day with a screening of the ‘London African History Through Representation In The Capital’ followed by a discussion on the little known two millennia of London’s African history and representation across the metropolis.
The event is led by community historian Kwaku, who put together the video which captures some of London’s African representations across street names, statues, plaques, buildings and much more. This speaks to the Spirit Of African Jubilee Year 1987-88 – one of the tenets of the African Jubilee Year Declaration, which called for the promotion of positive imagery, achievements and contributions of Africans at home and abroad.
It’s a participatory forum, where attendees of this online event are expected to contribute to the discussions by not only asking questions, but also by mentioning any of London’s African-related artefacts and representations that they are in public spaces. There will be a special Spirit Of African Jubilee Year 1987-88 clap for any attendee whose contribution is new to Kwaku!
Although Covid-19 lockdown restrictions may have been lifted, Londoners may find it safer just staying at home and learning more about the African history across their city, by attending this Zoom meeting. And as it’s online, this event is also open to a global audience, keen to learn more about London, besides the Queen, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben!
