Forward to Freedom tells the story of the British Anti-Apartheid Movement and its campaigns to support the people of South Africa in their fight against apartheid. The AAM also campaigned for freedom for Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Angola, and against South Africa’s attacks on its neighbours.
In the mid-1980s Oldham AA was one of the most active of Greater Manchester’s AAM branches and Oldham was a centre of anti-apartheid campaigning.
Gallery Oldham is showing the AAM Forward to Freedom exhibition as part of Black History Month in Greater Manchester, 23 September–31 October. Oldham Archives have photos, leaflets and press cuttings of Oldham Anti-Apartheid Group, as well as the group’s ‘Boycott Apartheid’ banner. Time 10am-5pm.
