PER-SO-NA

This immersive one-woman show discusses clashing identities of what it means to be a not-so-typical Yorùba Nigerian girl; tough, Vulnerable, Woke, Traditional, Queer. It unpacks the ordeal of being defined by labels and the artificial construct of cultural borders (using the fourth wall performance technique). It beautifully and powerfully combines Culture, Identity and Contemporary Art. It sits within the Queer context.

The character (Ápinké) is unique and a provocateur. She is brassy and sure of herself, and certain that she is not going to conform to the traditional stereotype and judgemental mind-set expected of her by her people. She is tired of sweeping tribal generalisations. Ápinké will never run away from her identity but she wishes to be effing left alone to express herself in her own way- ”in a contemporary and futuristic manner”. She states that sexuality is a buffet, not a set menu. She only desires to bring about a new world order for herself and shine a new light on the existing one.

However, where she is from… it’s not so easy to do this! This is her story.
