As the influential drummer from iconic rock’n’roll band The Hollies, Bobby Elliott has six decades worth of musical anecdotes. Continually touring since 1963, his adventures have seen him beating Keith Moon in a drumming audition for Shane Fenton and the Fentones, being serenaded by Joni Mitchell while she was in bed with Graham Nash and being offered a job by Paul McCartney to work with Wings. Covering all such stories as well as exploring Bobby’s personal highs and lows, It Ain’t Heavy, It’s My Story is a funny, honest and enlightening account of sixty years on the frontline of rock’n’roll.
In 1963, as the world was changing from black and white into Technicolor, a group of northern lads set up their two humble guitar amplifiers and drum kit in Abbey Road studios. The red recording light lit up and The Hollies leaped into life – and into the unknown.
The five Hollies were there at the start of the Rock Revolution; a time when British bands first invaded America and conquered the world. Little did they know that they would become one of England’s best-loved and most successful groups; fifty-seven years later, they’re still on the road, having performed live in every one of those years.
Bobby Elliott has meticulously kept diaries since he was a child, and although many have tried to persuade him over the years, he has not collected the contents into a book – until now. From appearing on the first ever Top Of The Pops with The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, The Dave Clarke Five, The Swinging Blue Jeans and The Beatles, to partying at the Ad Lib with John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Bobby’s stories are a part of rock’n’roll history.
