Blackkklansman

4 May 1-3.30pm

Join us for a screening of Spike Lee’s Oscar winning 2018 film, Blackkklansman.

Based on a true story, the film follows Ron Stallworth, the first African-American detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department, who resolves to make a name for himself and a difference in his community as he bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: to infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. This free event is presented in partnership with Liverpool Screen School at Liverpool John Moores University and will include an introduction by Programme Leader in Film Studies Ruth Doughty, who will discuss the film and the work of visionary director Spike Lee.

Film classification: 15

As part of this special event, we will also be giving away a limited edition print celebrating Spike Lee to the first 20 lucky attendees. There will also be opportunity to view and handle museum collections to find out more about civil rights activism, resistance and the continuing fight for social justice.

Ruth Doughty is the Programme Leader in Film Studies at Liverpool John Moores University. Her research interests include African American cinema, Film Music and Theory. Ruth is one of the co-founding editors of the peer-reviewed Routledge journal Transnational Cinemas. She also co-authored the book Understanding Film Theory (2017, 2nd edition). Ruth is currently researching the history of the Littlewoods Pools building in Liverpool as part of an oral history/audio-visual community project.
