Marcus Garvey: Foolish Fanatic or a Great Leader of the Black Masses?

Monday 19th October

Professor Neil Wynn, University of Gloucestershire
The charismatic Marcus Garvey was born in Jamaica, and later lived at different times in the USA, the UK and Jamaica. He is a national hero in Jamaica, and Martin Luther King described him as ‘the first man on a mass scale and level to give millions of Negroes a sense of dignity and destiny’; yet one of the co-founders of the NAACP in the USA could describe him as ‘without doubt, the most dangerous enemy of the Negro race in America and in the world’, and as ‘either a lunatic or a traitor’. So, fanatic or great leader? Professor Wynn considers the evidence. Non-members of the Historical Association are very welcome.
Gloucester (venue tba), 7.30 pm. £3 (HA members and students free). No booking required – pay at the door.

Good parking and can be reached by the 94U bus from Gloucester City centre or Cheltenham.
